For the past few years, when we received our income tax return back, I have purchased a high-end kitchen tool. Several years ago it was a professional KitchenAid stand mixer. Last year, it was a Nutrimill grain mill. This year, I debated long and hard about what to purchase. It ultimately came down to an Excalibur dehydrator or a Vitamix blender. Ultimately, the Vitamix 5200 won out and I happily headed to Williams Sonoma to pick out my new blender.I am a huge believer in the health-restoring power of green smoothies. I would rather my kids drink a glass of green smoothie everyday, then give them synthetic vitamins that don't have nearly the bioavailability of real food. Since we started drinking green smoothies regularly, I have seen a huge reduction in the amount of illnesses my kids have.
My kids like green smoothies, but they frequently refuse to drink them if they are too chunky. After years of fighting with multiple cheap discount store blenders that left my smoothies with bits of greens or berry seeds, I was so excited to give my new Vitamix a whirl.
For my first smoothie, I decided to really put it to the test. I wanted to see if the Vitamix 5200 was really all that it claimed to be. I filled the blender jar with whole carrots, kale, a whole head of romaine, a whole orange, and other healthy goodies. With my old $40 blender, I literally had to shred the carrots before I threw them in the blender and it left bits of kale no matter how long I processed it.
I stared in awe as my Vitamix went to work. Within 45 second I had a perfectly smooth green smoothie. I can't tell you how impressed I was. My kids downed their glasses and asked for seconds, even my picky son. Cleanup was a breeze too. Just one drop of dishwashing liquid in about 3 cups of water. I ran the blender on high for about 30 seconds and then rinsed everything in hot water. Thanks to my new Vitamix blender, breakfast is ready in less than 5 minutes, and that includes clean-up.
I drink a green smoothie for breakfast nearly everyday. Dark leafy greens are so beneficial to your health but I have to admit, I really don't like the taste. I have found green smoothies are a wonderful way for me to consume large amounts because the flavor of the greens is masked by the fruit.
Starting at around $400, a Vitamix blender is definitely not a purchase to make lightly. I debated getting one for several years before deciding that I was tired of blowing out the motors on cheaper blenders every 6 months. While the Vitamix 5200
So tell me... Do you have a professional blender like the Vitamix or Blendtec? Is it on your wish list?

I use a blentec and like it a lot but have heard great reviews about the Vitamix and at times wish I would have held out for it. We are starting to do more green smoothies and actually going to try dates to sweeten today - hope it works well and thanks for the advice on softening them.
