My grandmother absolutely loves my homemade soft pretzels. So I thought I would make them pink and heart-shaped. I wanted to take some over to her on Valentine's Day as a treat.
I hate using food coloring, so I tried to think of a way to make the pretzels pink some other way. I settled on strawberry puree for part of the water. I thought that would be fun. I upped the honey a bit and figured they could be a sweet pretzel. Since I was planning on playing around with the recipe, I figured I better make a trial batch first to see if it worked. It's a good thing I did!
First of all, instead of pink dough, it turned sort of grey. (I guess that is because of the whole wheat flour.) I could have dealt with the color if they tasted good. The dough rose well, which was good since I wasn't sure how it would do with the fruit puree substitution for part of the water. So I shaped them into cute little hearts and hoped for the best.
Unfortunately I wasn't all that pleased with the taste either. They were slightly sweet, but if I hadn't known it was strawberries in there, I wouldn't have known what the flavor was exactly. The only plus was that they look cute and I figured out how to shape them to get them to stay in the heart shape.
Sigh. I guess I will be sticking to my regular soft pretzel recipe and will just shape them into hearts.
Sometimes my kitchen experiments just don't work! So tell me... Have you had any flops in the kitchen lately?
