The Importance of a Healthy Breakfast, a coupon, and a Giveaway

This Giveaway is now closed!

I have to admit that I have set some lofty goals for myself as a mother. One of those goals is serving my children a hot nutritious breakfast every morning before school. Visions of soaked whole grain waffles and hearty bowls of oatmeal topped with fresh fruit dance in my head, but the reality is that I am not always able to do that. I have a confession to make... My children often eat cold cereal for breakfast before heading off to school. Phew! There I said it. I feel much better!

Although it may not be my ideal, at least they eat breakfast before school everyday. Studies have demonstrated the benefits of eating breakfast. A 1998 study showed that children who eat breakfast tend to perform better at school. Compared to children who skip breakfast, children who eat breakfast score higher on tests, are less likely to miss class or be tardy, have fewer reported discipline problems, and make fewer trips to the office.

Even if I do have to forgo the hot breakfast for the sake of getting the kids on the bus on time, I am grateful that I still do have better options than resorting to bowls of sugar disguised as a breakfast cereal. On mornings where my kids have cereal for breakfast I choose to offer them cereals made with whole grains and less sugar.

For that reason I was pleased to see the announcement that General Mills has made a commitment to further reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving. The company has already been reducing sugar in cereals while increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain.

So even if I have to serve my kids cold cereal for breakfast, I can feel good about the fact that General Mills is working continually to make their cereals a better choice for kids. Now if they would just come out with an organic version!

Right now if you visit here you can print a $1 off coupon for one of four varieties of General Mills cereals.

Thanks to General Mills and MyBlogSpark, I am pleased to offer one Miss Organics Kitchen reader 2 General Mills Cereal free product coupons, each good for any single box of cereal up to $6.

I don't have my own little ones yet, but as the oldest child I used to prepare my siblings for school so I know all about being crunched for time. My youngest brother rarely woke up ten minutes before he had to leave, so I'd pack snack size bags of Cheerios for him to eat on the school bus in the morning. Not only did it force him to eat breakfast, but it's made him a better snacker-when he's cravings a little something he reaches for Cheerios instead of junk food!
